Biology and Wetland Resources

Wetland Delineation and Jurisdictional Determinations

Wetlands, riparian areas, and streams are important resources in California's coastal environment. Through construction and other means, these resources have started to decline, along with the plants and wildlife that rely on them for food and shelter. A Wetland Delineation establishes the size and location of these areas for local, state, and federal laws to ensure that they are not in danger of being overrun by a project. Biologists are required to conduct site visits, flag the boundaries, and collect samples of the wetland areas to help designate the entire site on a map. A Jurisdictional Delineation is used to identify the area designated in the Wetland Delineation as a "Waters of the United States". If it is designated as such, the area is subject to the Federal Clean Water Act statutes.
