Soil Vapor Extraction and Air Sparging at a Dry Cleaner - Private Client

Rincon Consultants installed and operated a vapor extraction and air sparging remediation system at an operating shopping center in the Reseda area of Los Angeles. The remediation was conducted under the regulatory oversight of the Regional Water Quality Control Board (RWQCB).

Soil gas and groundwater samples were been periodically obtained from this site during the course of site remediation. The samples showed that the levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in soil gas and groundwater substantially decreased since the operation of the remediation system. Rebound testing of the remediation system confirmed that the remediation process reached its target goals.

In addition to the soil gas sampling done before and after the completion of remedial activities, Rincon collected confirmatory soil matrix samples near the remediation area. The completion of the confirmatory sampling was as required by the RWQCB. Soil matrix samples were analyzed for VOCs and compared to pre-remediation concentrations of VOCs in soil.

There was up to a 99.8 percent decrease in tetrachloroethene (PCE) in soil gas between pre-remediation and post remediation sampling. In most samples, the post remediation confirmation soil matrix sampling showed a 95% or greater reduction from the pre-remediation concentrations. Furthermore, there has been a 96 to 98% decrease in PCE in groundwater from several wells being monitored as part of the remediation program.

Based on the successful completion of soil vapor extraction and air sparging remediation of this property, the RWQCB issued full environmental closure for soil and groundwater at this site.
